Nick Mevoli - in memoriam

I am sure that any extreme sport athlete would find it a blessing to leave this world doing what they love to do, but for those left behind the question is: was it truly worth it?

Williamsburg-based deep-water diver Nick Mevoli passed at only 34 while attempting to break the US record at one of the top free diving competitions, Vertical Blue, held in the Bahamas.  He was hoping to reach 72 mt on a single inhalation, with no fins or supplemental oxygen...yeah, pretty insane.  More details about the story on today's NY Times.

Respect for an amazing athlete, that while unknown to me, had developed his ability to dive to 72 meters without any aid on one single inhalation...  I think about the hours and hours of training and the notable skills that he had accumulated to take on such a feat!  God bless him!

This makes me think of the wonderful movie "Le Grand Blue" by Luc Besson, though I did not know Nick Mevoli.
